The Bulldog originated in England and had the unfortunate and scary job of being a bait dog for bulls. The bull baiting held two purposes – first, for the entertainment factor of two animals fighting (we know now that this sort of ‘entertainment’ is sick and illegal) and second because people thought bull meat tasted better if the bull fought in this way before it was butchered. Thankfully, in 1835 bull baiting was outlawed.

After that initial ‘job’ was taken away from them, Bulldogs became companion animals. The fight was bred out of them and their personality became very friendly and full of character. Today, Bulldog owners will say that these dogs are comical and fun and among the most calm and mellow of all dog breeds. While they can still be stubborn, they love their humans and are willing to please. They are also good with other pets and people.

While these dogs are great companions with sweet personalities, they are very unhealthy dogs that are prone to many, many health conditions. A few of these are brachycephalic syndrome (a respiratory disorder), hip dysplasia (the malformation of the hip joint), internalized tail (where the tail grows inward instead of outward), and cherry eye (a congenital eye defect).

All of these conditions (and more) are very expensive to treat and can cost Bulldog owners up to several thousands of dollars at the vet. Pet insurance is one way Bulldog owners can ease the financial burden of owning this special breed. Pet insurance providers will reimburse a portion of each veterinary visit back to the pet owner, allowing them to pay the bill knowing that they won’t actually be out the full amount. Especially for unhealthy breeds like this, pet insurance is a great option.

Aside from these health conditions, Bulldogs are also quite high maintenance. They wheeze, snore, and drool, and their wrinkles must be cleaned daily. They do not handle warm weather well and can overhead in hot or humid conditions. Bulldogs stand between 12 and 15 inches high, weigh between 40 and 50 pounds, and live to be between eight and twelve years old.
